What you need to know about coal and the Shawville Generating Station

The Shawville Generating Station is a coal-fired power plant located in Shawville, Pennsylvania that is owned by dirty energy utility GenOn Energy. This plant is responsible for 61 deaths, 100 heart attacks, and 950 asthma attacks each year as a result of the pollution it spews out.

In 2011, Shawville Generating Station was ranked the third most polluting coal plant in the United States in a study done by Environment Integrity Project, Sierra Club and Earthjustice.Fortunately, in February 2012, GenOn Energy announced that it would be closing seven coal generating stations by 1015 because of upcoming environmental regulations, and that Shawville Generating Station would be among them.1 Let’s hope that GenOn Energy keeps its promise to shut down this plant, for the sake of the people of Shawville, Pennsylvania. Closing this plant will prove that people are more important than polluters. Click here to find out more about this plant...
